I Can Statements

Holy vacation, Batman! I am so happy I cannot even find the words. I've been sick all week, and between that and the blizzard and the snow days and delays, I'm done for. I'm sure that I will be able to formulate a coherent sentence once I get some rest! Tonight, however, all I have to offer is a giveaway.

I've worked hard to get my own head around the CCSS this year, particularly with regard to Non-Fiction, as we have focused heavily on this in PD this year. I've also worked hard with my class to help them learn exactly what the expectations are of them as readers of informational text with regard to the standards. Lastly, I've taken some time to examine the 3rd and 4th grade RIT standards, in order to have a sense of what should (hopefully) be in place for the majority of my kids when they get to 5th grade. As with most things we do for the 1st time, I'll be much better at it next year. Trial and error helps a lot.

Part of what I think will help my kids is a clear sense of the standards in their own words. I've had my 5th Grade "I Can" Statement posters up in my shop for quite a bit, and I've added 3rd and 4th grade to the mix as well:

Click on any of the above to find out more. To celebrate my upcoming February break next week, I'll be giving away 3 sets of these puppies to the 1st three people who comment. Make sure to leave a note about your grade level preference!

Happy Weekend!

    1. Yes, she's my friend and I adore her work. I'll let her know you like it as well. Shameless plug for her: she's also published 2 picture books and has another coming out in March. We used her 1st one (Wink: the Ninja who Wanted to be Noticed) as a school-wide read-aloud and the kids were obsessed. My too cool for school 5th grade boys adore the main character.
